Aztecs run at Mt. SAC Invitational
WALNUT • The Barstow cross country teams took part in another big meet last Friday, traveling to Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut for the Mt. SAC Invitational.
The Aztecs finished with some fine individual performances that left head coach Jim Ortiz very happy with how his team has progressed this season.
“Everyone improved greatly from last year,” he said. “We had kids like Ashby De La Paz, who dropped five minutes off his time.”
De La Paz placed 114th in the JV race with a time of 20:10. The best finish overall for Barstow was taken by the freshman boys team. The Aztecs were in seventh place among 17 teams, with 184 points. In first place was Paso Robles with 75 points.
The highest placing for a Barstow runner was the 17th place secured by Haydn Diaz, who finished the freshman race in 18:11. Brandon Mora was 42nd at 18:55, with Devlin Diaz next at 19:12.
The Aztec varsity boys came in 12th among 20 teams. The highest-placing Barstow runner was Geng-wei Lee, whose time of 17:17 gave him 29th place, while Frankie Baca (17:20) was 32nd among the 133 who competed.
Unfortunately, there were some problems with the timing system used, and some of the Aztec runners were affected.
“The new timing system did not count our fourth man,” said coach Ortiz of the boys varsity race. “That would have placed us higher.”
The Lady Aztecs placed 21st in the varsity race. A group of sophomores helped propel the team, as Evelin Reyes came in 100th with a time of 24:27, followed by Tatyana Padilla 102nd (24:32) and Vanessa Miranda 105th (24:40).
This was the final meet of the regular season. Coming up next is the Desert Sky League Finals at Victor Valley College on Nov. 6.
