Lady Aztecs clipped by Eagles at Oak Hills
HESPERIA • The Barstow girls basketball team continued play in the Oak Hills Tournament on Thursday, and lost to Lancaster, 46-44.
It was a much closer game than the previous tourney match, which the Lady Aztecs lost to the host team by 57 points on Wednesday. The Lady Eagles held a slight, 9-6, lead after the first quarter, but Barstow busted out offensively in the second, outscoring its opposition, 17-6, to lead by eight at halftime. Lancaster made up a bit of lost ground in the third, but Barstow was still ahead going into the final quarter.
“We did a lot better than yesterday, but we should have had this one,” said Aztecs coach Jerry Enriquez. “We were leading for most of the way; we just didn’t play a full game.”
In the final minute, Barstow missed the front end of a one-and-one at the line. The Lady Eagles grabbed the rebound, scored to take the lead, and held on for the final seconds for the win.
Marion Mims led Barstow with a double-double, 15 points, 10 rebounds. Vasa Alefaio had 12 points, and Jasmine Green nine points.
There are two more days of play in the tourney.
“We just have to slow down and play smart. I thought we turned a corner the other day, but maybe we haven’t; something’s not clicking,” said Enriquez. “We’re coaching a style the girls have never played before. As soon as they grasp our style, they’ll be fine. I’ll take our growing pains now, before we play Burroughs next week.”
The Lady Aztecs will face University Prep at Oak Hills today at 4 p.m.
