Aztec grapplers host first meet
BARSTOW • The Barstow wrestling team hosted its first match of the season on Wednesday, and got edged by a strong Sultana squad, 44-30.
“We did pretty well, we wrestled a good team,” said Aztecs coach Sam Barnhart. “Sultana is habitually competitive.”
The Aztecs got four victories by pin. The fastest came in the heavyweight division, as Kiler Holmeyer needed only 17 seconds to pin Kevin Mendoza. At 113-pounds, Dallas Hawes pinned Evan Solis in 1:11; Julian Aguayo at 160-pounds pinned Eric Godina in 2:25; and at 145-pounds, Gabe Rodriguez pinned David Morales in 4:28.
“We wrestled well, but not to our potential,” said coach Barnhart. “I expect we’ll do better at our home tournament.”
Barstow will host the Aztec Wrestling Invitational this weekend. Seven teams will be on hand, including Victor Valley and Granite Hills from the Desert Sky League. The competition gets underway on Friday at 3 p.m., and will continue Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
