Hawks take first-place honors
ADELANTO • The Barstow Junior High Hawk Marching Band has accumulated a number of awards in recent months, and the BJHS band received its latest accolade at Adelanto City Hall on Jan. 8.
The Hawk Marching Band was honored for winning first place in December’s Adelanto Christmas Parade. The BJHS band was voted first amongst three bands in the “Jr. High School Band” category.
“This was our first year participating in the Adelanto Christmas Parade,” Band Director Dan Barilone said. “The band has enjoyed some great success this year with the culmination of a first-place award.”
In addition to the Adelanto Christmas Parade, the BJHS band has recently participated in local parades that include the Barstow Mardi Gras Parade and the Victorville Christmas Parade. The band has also competed in events like November’s La Palma Band Review, where it won two sweepstakes trophies.
“We generally participate in very competitive band reviews against L.A. and Orange County bands but we also perform at community parades,” Barilone said.
The Hawk Marching Band won a $400 cash award at the Adelanto Christmas Parade.
“Most of the High Desert bands don’t participate at competitive parades and reviews, so when we march with them there is an obvious difference in the bands,” Barilone said. “That is due to the fact that Victor Valley, Apple Valley, and Hesperia Schools have cut most, if not all, of their elementary music programs.
“Barstow Unified School District Administration has stayed the course with us, and that means we have a solid elementary program as our feeder, which makes us a solid feeder for the high school program.”
