Hesperia man arrested for starting brush fire
HESPERIA — With two wild fires ripping through the San Bernardino Mountains and with fire-fighting resources already spread thin, a Hesperia man was arrested Tuesday night for allegedly starting a brush fire on Highway 173.
Around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, CHP officers posted on 173 at Arrowhead Lake Road were notified by a passing motorist of a brush fire west of the entrance to the Mojave River Forks Regional Park.
Officers responded and found three men with shovels throwing dirt on the brush fire. It had burned a 20 by 20-foot area.
CHP officer Chris Denkers was advised a suspect was seen crouched down by a red motorcycle near where the fire began.
With the help of the CHP air support unit, John Alfred Rund, 48, of Hesperia was found at the Los Flores Ranch on State Route 173.
A field line-up was conducted, and Rund was positively identified as the suspect.
A San Bernardino County arson investigator found physical evidence at the crime scene that linked Rund to the fire.
Rund was arrested and booked into the Victorville jail and charged with arson, a felony.
