Elizabeth Smart to speak at BCH event

Hospital's Healthy Woman group will celebrate 7th anniversary

SENIOR STAFF WRITER

BARSTOW • The story of Elizabeth Smart, kidnapped in 2002 and rescued nine months later, made national headlines. Smart will speak next month in Barstow.

Smart is slated to be the keynote speaker at Barstow Community Hospital’s Healthy Woman seventh anniversary celebration on Sept. 13, according to Aimara Freeman, community outreach coordinator for BCH.

Healthy Woman is intended to empower women and their families to make informed health care decisions, according to their website.

“(This year) is going to be similar (to past years) in the sense that it will be focused toward women,” Freeman said Friday. “This ties into that because Elizabeth Smart will come out to talk to the women about overcoming adversity.”

A gourmet dinner, prizes and additional entertainment will be provided, she added.

The anniversary celebration begins at 6 p.m. and will take place at the Cora Harper Fitness Center at 851 Barstow Rd.

Tickets are $30 for Healthy Woman members and $40 for non-members, although membership for Healthy Woman is free.

Visit BarstowHospital.com/HealthyWoman to become a member.

Visit the website or call 760-957-3347 to purchase tickets or more for information.

Freeman said tickets, which went on sale last month, are anticipated to sell out.

There were approximately 150 remaining as of Friday, she said.

Tickets can not be purchased at the door for this event.
