I would like to thank our local police department and law enforcement across the San Bernardino County for their efforts to make sure local stores are not selling synthetic drugs. These drugs, known as “bath salts” and “Spice,” are dangerous toxic drugs that have been deceptively packaged and sold as things like “Scooby Snax,” incense, and ladybug repellent. These deceptions have been a conscious attempt to circumvent existing statewide and national laws and deceive our kids into believing these dangerous drugs are harmless. The truth is, of course, far from it. These highly addictive, toxic drugs have been the cause of thousands of emergency medical situations — some of which have resulted in debilitating conditions and deaths. In 2011, calls to nationwide poison control centers due to “Spice” and “Bath Salts” totaled 12,962 — up from 3,288 in 2010 — a nearly 400 percent increase. I for one am relieved that law enforcement is taking the leadership to reverse the negative trend for our Barstow community.
