City to recognize current active military with banner
BARSTOW • The city of Barstow is beginning its second phase of honoring military members from the Barstow area.
The city is accepting applications for the program until September 28 from the immediate families of locals currently on active duty.
The city of Barstow will also recognize members from neighboring communities — Yermo, Lenwood, Hinkley, Daggett and Newberry Springs.
The banner program requires the honored service member to be a resident of Barstow or the neighboring cities for at least five years, and must have resided there when he or she enlisted for the armed services.
The City of Barstow recognized military members and veterans with banners and city pavers in front of City Hall last year.
This year, the program has been expanded so that each current military member will have his or her own banner with a photo, name, rank and branch of service, to be displayed throughout the city.
The city is hopeful the banners will be up and ready for a ceremony near Veterans Day in November.
Applications can be obtained through City Hall or the City of Barstow’s website. For more information call 760-255-5151 or visit www.barstowca.org.
