Aztec wrestlers beat Cougars

APPLE VALLEY • The Barstow wrestling team was able to overcome a slow start to beat Granite Hills, 41-38, in a Desert Sky League road match on Monday.

Through the first four weight classes, there was a double forfeit, plus a forfeit by the Aztecs in the 220-pound class. Add in two other Barstow losses, and the visitors trailed, 15-0.

At that point, the Aztecs’ fortunes turned. Kiler Holmeyer got Barstow’s first points by pinning the Cougars’ Johnny Gonzalez in 4:30, to win at heavyweight. That was followed by four more pins: at 106-pounds, Adam Valdez pinned Jason Sinclair in 3:12; at 113-pounds, Jose Rubio Jr. pinned John Torres in 2:56; Dallas Hawes pinned Todd Riding in 1:49 at 120-pounds; and at 126-pounds, Dominic Robles pinned Don Williams in 3:28.

That was followed by the Aztecs’ Ryan Barela winning by tech fall over Kyle Berry, to take the 132-pound class, 15-0. And at 138-pounds, there was one more pin as Barstow’s Cody Perez pinned Tristan Griffin in 2:40.

The win makes the Aztecs 2-0 in the DSL. They’ll compete at home tonight against Victor Valley, Senior Night, for a 6 p.m. varsity start.
