BHS to host seminars for college-bound students

STAFF WRITER

BARSTOW • Barstow High School is hosting two seminars this month to help prepare students for continuing their education.

According to BHS Career Center Technician Robbie Willetts, the career center and Barstow Community College Financial Aid Technician Wendy Packer will overview all of the aspects of financial aid, including FAFSA, grants and scholarships at the Fund Your Future seminar.

Fund Your Future begins at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 13 in the old boys gym, according to Willetts.

A seminar aimed toward student-athletes, Guiding the College-Bound Athlete, will take place at 7 p.m. on Jan. 27 in the Don Bilsborough Memorial Gym. The seminar will help prepare parents and student-athletes who aspire to play at the college level for the “road ahead,” Willetts said.

It is aimed at those who are not familiar with the ins and outs of academic requirements and eligibility. The seminar will also provide families with information about the availability of athletic scholarships and the realities of the college recruiting process.

According to Willetts, Guiding the College-Bound Athlete, is a program designed by Rick Wire, President of Pennsylvania-based Dynamite Sports. Wire is the father of former National Football League player Coy Wire. The program will be presented by Casey Wire, Coy Wire’s brother.

Willetts advises interested participants to arrive early, to receive handouts and watch a “powerful” pre-program video.
