HINKLEY • A section of Old Highway 58 remains closed in both directions after a sinkhole opened under the roadway Saturday afternoon.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol closed Old Highway 58 from Lenwood Road to Lassen Street after receiving reports of a sinkhole at 5:20 p.m. Saturday afternoon, according to Sgt. Chuck Wagner. The closure was shortened Sunday, and it now runs approximately half a mile west of Lenwood Road.

A five foot by three foot portion of the sinkhole is visible on the north side of the highway, but it continues underneath the road. A crack runs north and south from the sinkhole for hundreds of yards into the desert and under the asphalt.

Wagner said the highway will remain closed until road crews can assess the damage and make repairs. He advised cars to follow the posted detours to get around the sinkhole.
