Man stabbed in brawl in stable condition
Alleged assailant arrested
BARSTOW • Authorities say a Barstow man is in intensive care after being stabbed early Wednesday morning during a brawl between several people, and his alleged attacker is behind bars.
According to Barstow Police Department Lt. Mike Hunter, Matthew Chambers is in stable condition after he was stabbed in the chest and in the left side of his stomach area.
Chambers, 22, was stabbed during a physical altercation between several people in the 200 block of West Buena Vista Street at about 12:09 a.m., according to a news release from the Police Department. Hunter said approximately 20 people may have been involved in the fight, according to the person who reported the incident.
When BPD officers arrived on the scene, Chambers was found with a knife stuck in the left side of his stomach, according to the release.
Chambers was treated at the scene before being flown to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton with serious injuries.
Hunter said Chambers underwent surgery Wednesday morning and was in the intensive care unit.
Upon investigation, the BPD learned that one person was attacked by multiple subjects. The initial victim left the scene and “recruited several friends” who all returned to the location to confront the attacking group, the release states.
An argument escalated to a physical fight between the groups.
According to the release, during the fight Andrew Perez went inside a residence and retrieved a “large wooden-handle kitchen knife” and returned to the brawl.
After stabbing Chambers, Perez, 20, fled the scene before returning and surrendering to officers. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Perez told authorities he stabbed Chambers in self defense, according to the release.
Perez is currently being held at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto in lieu of $100,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned at the Victorville courthouse on Friday, booking records show.
