Garage blaze kills Barstow man

STAFF WRITER

BARSTOW • The body of a man living in a garage was found after a fire destroyed the garage early Sunday morning.

According to a report from the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner’s office, the Barstow Police Department and Barstow Fire Protection District responded to the fire in the 200 block of North Third Avenue at approximately 4:45 a.m.

Chris Matson, who lives at the residence, identified the deceased only by his first name, Will. Matson said he believed the man was 47 years old. Matson said Will had been living in the detached garage for more than two months.

A vehicle and a trailer parked next to the garage also burned in the fire.

Matson said there was not anyone else injured in the fire and is awaiting to speak to investigators to “clear-up what happened.”

According to Matson, authorities said candles could have been the cause of the fire. The property does not have any electricity due to an ongoing dispute with Edison.

Bobby Clemmer, BFPD captain, said there was not any foul play immediately suspected, but the cause of fire is still underdetermined.

Further information was not immediately available on Monday.
