BARSTOW • Girl Scout cookies will be readily available in the Barstow area this weekend as local troops celebrate National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend Feb. 7-9.

The Barstow area is home to seven different Girl Scout troops, and all seven troops will be selling cookies throughout the weekend at various locations around the city and beyond.

Lifelong Barstow resident Carol Mauk is the leader of Girl Scout Troop 659 Barstow. Mauk has been a leader in the Girl Scouts for nearly 12 years and says the best part of the job is watching the kids develop as people.

“It’s watching the girls grow and become independent and confident,” Mauk said. “It’s watching them just feel good about themselves. ... It’s just been a great experience. I’ve watched girls come out of their shell and experience things that they wouldn’t usually experience anywhere else.”

Local troops will be selling cookies at locations including Walmart, Stater Bros., Vons, Rite-Aid, International House of Pancakes and Del Taco on East Mountain View.

Barstow-area Girl Scouts will also have cookies available in Ludlow at Dairy Queen, and at the Country Store in Baker.

Troop 659 has composed and produced a music video about Girl Scout Cookies, available for viewing at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFCr2f7rYiw, or by searching “Troop 659 Barstow” into the YouTube search function.
