VHC-Barstow gives veterans a home

BARSTOW • Former Army Colonel Michael J. Moore says he enjoys a high quality of life at the Veterans Home of California-Barstow.

“Outside of being young, it’s the best thing that ever happened to me,” Moore said. “I would put youth ahead of this place. But once you’ve passed that point there’s nothing better than this place.”

Since opening in 1996, VHC-Barstow has been a place that retired veterans can call home. VHC-Barstow is one of eight veterans homes in the state, and sits atop a hill on Veterans Parkway off Barstow Road.

The mission statement for VHC says the program’s goal is “to provide the state’s aged or disabled veterans with rehabilitative, residential, and medical care and services in a home-like environment.”

VHC-Barstow has 400 beds, with different levels of medical care available to residents.

“They literally take care of all of your medical, they will take care of all of your dental,” Moore said. “They’ll take care of glasses if you need it. Anything that you need, they take care of. They bring you in whether you like it or not for physicals, to make sure you’re healthy. They take care of you until the day you die.”

To apply for residency at VHC-Barstow, applicants must be veterans, residents of California, age 55 or older (or younger if disabled), and have served honorably in the military.
