Barstow thumps Adelanto

BARSTOW • Everyone got in on the action in the Lady Aztecs’ latest game.

The Barstow girls basketball team hosted Adelanto on Tuesday, and played to a big, 59-15, Desert Sky League victory at Barstow High School.

The Lady Saints, new to the DSL, are having a rough inaugural year. They’re a scrappy bunch that never gives up, but they have just one win so far. Tuesday’s match gave the home team an opportunity to experiment a bit, according to Barstow coach Jerry Enriquez.

“We got a lot of playing time for the bench,” he said. “We got some good minutes from everybody. We still missed a few lay-ups, but other than that a good game.”

The Lady Aztec starters got going immediately, and held an 18-5 lead by the end of the first quarter. Tiare Alefaio led the way early on, tipping in six points from the post.

Barstow began subbing in the second, with three players coming off the bench to start the quarter. Kamrien Proctor and Elisha Garrett both picked up points, leaving the Lady Aztecs with a 20-point halftime edge. Barstow pressed for much of the first half, but drew back for the last 16 minutes.

“We changed our zone defense a little in the second,” said coach Enriquez. “I wanted to practice it for Silverado on Thursday, because they like to shoot three’s.”

Barstow did as well offensively in the second as the first, with 30 points. Marion Mims led the way with 14 points, with 12 for Maxine Cooks and 10 for Jasmine Green. Harley Carter sank a field goal in the second half, while Alissa Parks off the bench hit two shots.

Enriquez regarded the game mainly as a warm-up for the match with the Lady Hawks. It’s been nip-and-tuck between the two teams this year, with Barstow winning by three points in early December at the Oak Hill Tournament, and then the Lady Hawks winning by two on Jan. 7.

“We need to win the next two games before facing (first-place) Burroughs again, to keep our playoff chances alive,” said the coach. “I think the girls are ready for Silverado. As long as they play together and make their lay-ups, we should be fine.”

Barstow will be at Silverado Thursday, and at Granite Hills next Tuesday.

BARSTOW • The Lady Aztecs scored four times in the first half and held on for a 4-2 win over Adelanto, in Desert Sky League soccer on Tuesday.

Kortnee Brown got Barstow on the board at 12 minutes in, scoring with an assist from Alysia Sanchez. Six minutes later, Sanchez got a tally of her own, with Anna Alvarado assisting. Sanchez went on to score again in the 29th minute, off a Marissa Ceballos assist, then completed the hat trick 10 minutes later, with just a minute remaining in the half, off an assist from Hannah Ramirez.

“We played great in the first half, our communication and passing were great,” said Barstow head coach Frank Maldonado. “In the second we played kickball, got careless, and they scored twice. Other than that, we played a good game.”

The Lady Aztecs (10-5-3, 6-1-1) outshot the Lady Saints, 21-5. Barstow keeper Yessica Morales had one save.

Barstow will be at Silverado on Thursday, and at Granite Hills on Tuesday.
