Barstow wrestlers host tournament

BARSTOW • The Barstow wrestling team hosted the Barstow Tournament in the high school gym on Friday and Saturday, finishing third among the six teams taking part.

It was good practice for the squad early in the season, with the Aztecs taking four first-place finishes and two second place.

“We wrestled well overall,” said Barstow head coach Sam Barnhart. “We have some things to work on, but a good first week of competition.”

Finishing at the top of their weight classes were the Aztecs’ Jose Rubio Jr. at 113-pounds; Dominick Robles at 120-pounds; Gabe Rodriguez at 145-pounds; and heavyweight Kiler Holmeyer.

Ryan Barela (132 pounds) and Dallas Hawes (113 pounds) both finished second.

“It wasn’t bad for a first time out. It’s been a long two days,” said coach Barnhart on Saturday. “Hopefully we’ll continue to train hard and get better. I look forward to seeing the team develop this season. We should be successful.”

The Aztecs will wrestle at Hesperia on Tuesday.
