Police officer sworn in
Lewis is formerly an 11-year BPD reserve officer
BARSTOW • Tom Lewis, formerly an 11-year reserve officer with the Barstow Police Department, was sworn in Friday to full-time duty.
Lewis graduated from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Police Academy on Thursday.
As a Barstow resident, his familiarity to the city and the Police Department was deemed a strength by Police Chief Albert Ramirez.
“He knows the streets of Barstow already,” said Ramirez, during the 10 a.m. ceremony at City Council Chambers.
City Councilman Merrill Gracey, a retired California Highway Patrol officer, surprised the newest addition to the department by swearing him in.
Gracey, who has known Lewis since Lewis was 10 years old, had been authorized as the deputy to give the oath by City Clerk Joanne Cousino.
Lewis becomes the 37th sworn member of the department, according to Sgt. Andy Espinoza, Jr.
