The Vikings rush onto the field to mob Alex Pollard after he singled in the winning run against San Bernardino Valley at Barstow Community College.

Win and loss for Vikings

BARSTOW • The Barstow Community College baseball team continued to keep its playoff hopes alive with an extra-innings win on Wednesdsay. The Vikings hosted San Bernardino Valley and held off the Wolverines for a 7-6 win.

It was a big win for a couple of reasons. It comes on the heels of last week’s series against Rio Hondo in which Rio won two of the three games, the first series the Vikings had lost since dropping a pair to Mt. San Jacinto in early March. The Wolverines are also in first place in the Foothill Conference, where they’ve been fighting it out with second-place Barstow all year.

The Vikings got a run in the bottom of the first on James Carraway’s RBI single, but San Bernardino went ahead with two in the second. Trailing by a run in the sixth, Alex Pollard tied the game with a fielder’s choice, followed by Jayson Henderson drawing a bases-loaded walk, putting the Vikings up, 3-2. Carraway hit another run-scoring single in the seventh.

Barstow was behind, 6-4, in the ninth, when it forced extra innings. Pollard had already driven in a run, and would be a thorn in the Wolverines side for the rest of the game. Joshua Gray hit an RBI double to pull the Vikings within one, and Pollard followed with an RBI single, to tie it at 6-6. After three scoreless frames, another Pollard single in the 13th drove in the winning run.

Gabriel Soto started, pitching seven innings of three-run - two earned - eight-hit ball, walking one and striking out six. Kris Soto relieved and got the win, giving up two earned runs on three hits, walking two and fanning four.

Manny Arciniega (5.1ip, 3r, 1er, 4h, 2bb, 2k), Kurtis Sargent (3ip, 3r, 3er, 4h, 1bb, 0k), and Brandon Kinser (L, 3.2ip, 1r, 1er, 8h, 2bb, 4k) pitched for the Wolverines.

That victory was followed by a loss to the Wolverines, 9-3, on Thursday.

The Vikings got nine hits off two San Bernardino pitchers. Gabriel Soto hit an RBI single, Kris Soto a sac fly, and Marcos Sanchez had a single and double and drove in a run. Michael McNicholl and Pollard also doubled.

Josh King (5-3) took the loss, giving up four runs on 10 hits over six innings, walking one and striking out three. Tyler Rich (5-2, 6.2ip, 3r, 6h, 0bb, 4k) got the win for the Wolverines.

The Vikings (20-10, 12-7) host the Wolverines (20-8, 12-4) for the rubber match of the series at 12 noon on Saturday.

LANCASTER • The Lady Vikings had a rough road game on Wednesday, falling to Antelope Valley, 15-1, in five innings.

Barstow got its run in the fourth with an RBI double from Tessa Saenz, scoring Megan Carr, who singled. Kelli Bolduc also singled in the game, for the Lady Vikings’ three hits.

Getting the complete-game victory was Barstow High School grad Hannah Ulibarri, who walked none and struck out five. She was also productive at the plate, with a single and run scored.

The Lady Vikings host San Bernardino Valley today for a 3 p.m. start.
