Aztecs blanked by Hawks
VICTORVILLE • As the Silverado football team gathered for its postgame huddle after beating Barstow, 44-0, Friday night at Hawk Stadium, word started to spread around the team.
The Hawks got the mulligan they desperately wanted.
With Victor Valley rallying to beat Burroughs, 24-23, the Hawks now have a shot at a share of the Desert Sky League title. They close out the regular season on the road against the Jackrabbits on Thursday.
“That would be fantastic, obviously,” Silverado head coach Rafael Ginorio said shortly before the score became official.
Silverado (6-3, 3-1 DSL) was dominant against Barstow (3-6, 1-3 DSL). The Hawks scored at least 10 points in every quarter and had a 20-0 lead at halftime. They held the Aztecs to just 111 yards of offense and forced three turnovers. The Hawks’ defense rang up 12 plays for a loss.
Barstow almost got on the board in the second quarter. The Aztecs drove to the Silverado 16, but were held and kicked a 37-yard field goal to make it 10-3. However, there was a personal foul penalty against the Hawks. Barstow accepted the penalty and continued its drive. After moving backward, the Aztecs attempted a 43-field goal that was low.
They didn’t get close again.
