Aztecs harriers place fourth
YUCAIPA • The Barstow cross country teams participated in another big meet last weekend, and this time brought home a trophy.
The Aztecs took part in the 43rd Annual Yucaipa Invitational, a huge meet which featured 18 races comprised of 48 boys teams and 44 girls teams.
The highest placing for Barstow was in the boys varsity race. Jurupa Hills was first with 36 points, followed by Citrus Valley (40), San Jacinto (53), and Barstow in fourth with 138 points. Eight teams placed in the race, which also had runners from six other schools.
“I’m proud of the kids. Again, a lot of personal records set,” said Aztecs head coach Jimmy Ortiz. “And we took home a fourth-place plaque. It’s been a while since the team won a plaque, so I’m very proud of them.”
The boys varsity race also featured the Aztecs’ fastest runner of the day. Geng-Wei Lee finished 20th with a time of 17:27, his best time ever. There were five other Aztecs who placed in the top 50: Frankie Baca was 32nd (18:04); Angelo Sciortino was 37th (18:33); Ryan Castro was 41st (18:48); Zachary Rucker was 42nd (18:55); and Vernon Sciortino was 44th (19:00). Just missing the top 50 was freshman Brandon Mora, whose time of 19:41 placed him 52nd in the field of 68 runners.
Kevin Maeda of Citrus Valley won the boys varsity race with a time of 15:23 on the three-mile course.
The Barstow JV girls also did well, taking fifth place with 142 points. Heritage placed first and also had the top runner, Kristen Briseno, who had a time of 20:48. Sophomore Nallely Gabino was the first Barstow runner, crossing the line in 26:51, good for 30th place. Another sophomore was next, Veronica Garnica, whose time of 28:19 gave her 35th place. She was followed by a pair of freshmen: Tasha Jackson (36th, 28:22), and Jasmine Witham (37th, 28:22).
The JV Aztecs came in sixth, with 120 points. There were nine teams in the JV boys race, plus members of four others. Cajon was first and also had the top runner, Jonah Mitchell, with a time of 17:19. Moayad Alnuiami finished first for Barstow, taking the 14th spot at 18:46. Sophomores Bryce Carston (19:00, 19th place) and Garrett Moon (19:44, 31st) were next for the Aztecs, followed by freshmen Jessie Garnica (19:45, 32nd) and Robert Richardson (19:47, 33rd), and junior Ezra Asher (19:53, 36th) all in the top 40.
The varsity girls were 10th with 154 points. Citrus Valley was first at 28, and had the top runner in Claire Graves, at 18:23. Chyna Irvin had her best time ever for the Lady Aztecs, finishing in 23:15 and taking 38th place. Vanessa Miranda was 57th with a time of 24:54, and Breanna Velasquez 64th at 25:19. A total of 81 runners took part.
Overall, the Barstow boys were 28th among the 48 teams, with a time of 1:31:38. Quartz Hill was first at 1:21:23. A Granite Hills split squad was first among the girls, at 1:38:27; Barstow was 42nd at 2:03:47.
