Lady Aztecs beat Sultana
HESPERIA • The Barstow volleyball team got the season off to a fine start on Thursday, hanging on for a 3-2 win over Sultana.
The Lady Aztecs dropped game one 26-28, won games two and three by scores of 25-10 and 25-17, lost game four 18-25, then took the deciding fifth game, 15-7. The Sultans (0-3) were playing their third match in as many nights.
"Overall, a good start," said Barstow head coach Brooke Verrill. "We have a few things to work on, but the team has to overcome a two-year losing streak. I think we accomplished a little of that tonight."
The first game slipped away from the Lady Aztecs, after they led most of the way. The next two went much smoother, thanks in part to several aces by Heather Verrill.
Verrill finished with 17 kills and seven aces, while Brianna Low and Teonia Gonzales each finished with 11 digs. Maxine Cooks had seven kills and one ace, and Chelsea Phillips tallied eight kills and one ace. Sophomore setter Marissa Keaton had 36 assists, fellow 10th-grader Jean Letuli chipped in with 13 kills, and Tiare Alefaio gave 33 assists.
"I've been with the team for six years and this is the first time we've beaten Sultana," said coach Verrill. "That's a nice accomplishment for the girls."
The Lady Aztecs begin their home schedule on Monday, hosting Rosamond for a 5 p.m. start.
