Aztecs fall to D-backs
PHELAN • “We had ‘em, then had another one of those innings.”
That was how Aztecs head coach Kenny Phillips summed up the Barstow baseball team’s Thursday game. The Diamondbacks were trailing by one when they staged a six-run fifth inning and went on to take a 9-5 victory at Serrano High School.
After the D-backs went ahead with a first-inning run, Barstow tied it in the second on a run-scoring fielder’s choice by Nathan Ridge. Serrano scored twice to take the lead in the fourth, but the Aztecs answered with three in the top of the fifth. Austin Crank drew a bases-loaded walk to score Sean Schoffstahl, and Austin Willis singled to bring in Colin Klein and Victor Ochoa.
That put Barstow ahead, but in the bottom half, the D-backs rallied for six. They got their hits, but there were also errors in the frame that fed off each other.
“We were making compound errors and digging ourselves in deeper,” said coach Phillips. “We’ll be ok if we can stop giving up the big inning.”
The Aztecs got one more run in the sixth, on an RBI single by Chris Huerta.
Crank started (5.2ip, 8er, 6h, 5bb, 4k) and Zeke Haenelt finished up (1.1ip, 0r, 0bb, 1k). The Aztecs got five runs on seven hits.
Barstow started off the season well, winning five of their first six games. The Aztecs have been on a slide lately, though, and have lost their last five.
“I can’t pinpoint the problem. We’re working hard and doing all the right things in practice,” said Phillips. “Our playoff hopes are still alive, but we’ve got to win three of the next four. We have to start swinging the bat and playing defense. When you break it down, it’s pretty easy.”
The Aztecs are home against Silverado on Wednesday.
