Events at Barstow Senior Center
The Barstow Senior Center, 555 Melissa Ave., will be offering the following programs on Friday: The Mojave Valley Carvers get together from 8 to 11 a.m. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuna casserole, broccoli, Caesar salad, roll and fruit cocktail. Bring a partner and join Don Livingston from 6 to 7 p.m. for couple western dance lessons. Music and dancing by Don Livingston will be offered from 7 to 10:30  p.m. Admission donation $5. And bring your favorite dish to share.

Karaoke at the American Legion in Newberry Spring #751 will be held the first and third Friday of each month from 7 to 11 p.m.. Everyone is welcome to come down to sing, dance, be entertained and simply have fun. Food will be available from the kitchen. All funds raised go to support veterans services and programs.

‘Back-to-school Blast’
Forerunner Christian Fellowship will be holding its annual Back-to-school Blast on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. at Foglesong Park. Free backpacks will be given to the first 100 school age kids. There will be a waterslide, food, snow cones and more.

‘Gods soulful music’
LaTron Lester will be holding a free concert/release party at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Barstow Church of God in Christ, 1375 Bishop Nathaniel Jones Jr. Way (former Sage Dr.)

Fort Irwin to host inaugural golf tournament
Fort Irwin’s Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation will host the Inaugural Fort Irwin Golf Tournament, a four-man scramble with chance to win a 2012 Honda Civic from Valley Hi Honda, on Saturday. Check-in at 7 a.m. The tournament will be played at Apple Valley Golf Course. All proceeds from this event go toward supporting special events and non-appropriated fund (NAF) construction projects for the Soldiers, families, civilians and retirees of the Fort Irwin community. Registration fee includes breakfast, 18 holes of golf, games, awards and a banquet. Extra games and raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the event. Attention gardeners!
Do you love to raise your own fruits and vegetables? Do you have a knack for growing ornamentals? Do you have tips to share with others, or are you simply a novice looking for help to turn your brown thumb green. Master Composters are looking for you. Join them on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Desert Discovery Center on Barstow Road. This month, the guest speaker will be Jesus Escobar. He will be talking about his worm farm in Newberry Springs on his All Solar Powered Ranch. Power point photo slides will be shown of his worms, worm beds, worm castings, etc. and the solar installations.
The group typically meets the third Saturday of the month at the DDC to discuss group business, and gardening/conservation issues. The public is invited to attend. For information, contact Don Woo, Master Composter Coordinator at or 951-265-8699.

Tupperware sale
Tupperware for sale at the Newberry Springs Senior Center, 333481 Newberry Road. Representatives from the Center will be selling Tupperware products beginning Saturday and continuing until September 15. All proceeds will go to benefit the Center.

NAACP meetings
The Barstow Branch of the NAACP meetings are held on the third Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Barstow Mall, 1860 E. Main St., office #1810.

Barstow Mall craft fair and mini swap meet
Barstow Mall is holding a craft fair and swap meet every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Space is free for non-profit organizations and all others are $5 for one spot or $10 for two spots. Saturday Night Cruisers
Bring your car and join the Saturday Night Cruisers every Saturday at 7 p.m. at Foster Freeze, 1580 W. Main St. For information, call 760-964-3777.

Karaoke at Eagles Lodge
The Eagles Lodge, 513 E. Main St., features Karaoke every Saturday at 8 p.m. All are welcome.


Sunday dinner
Newberry Springs Senior Center, 33381 Newberry Roads, will be serving a ‘build your own salad buffet’ on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. Along with a wide choice of salad fixings, there will be muffins, fruit, cottage cheese, dessert and beverage. Donation fee is $7 for adults, $3.50 for children twelve and under.

Knights of Columbus, 580 Victor St., will offer bingo every Sunday at 5 p.m. For information, call 760-252-4885.
