I-15 rollover leaves passenger dead, driver arrested
AFTON CANYON • A man was arrested for suspected felony driving-under-the-influence on Sunday after overturning his vehicle, resulting in a passenger’s death.
At approximately 5:15 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers were dispatched to a call of a single vehicle rollover on Interstate 15, near Afton Canyon Road, according to a news release from CHP.
According to the release, Jose Anguiano-Cazares was driving a 2008 GMC Sierra pickup truck on northbound I-15 at a “high rate of speed,” when the vehicle began drifting off the road to the center median.
As Anguiano-Cazares turned the vehicle back on the roadway, he lost control, forcing the truck to rotate in a clockwise direction, the release stated. The pickup truck overturned onto the right shoulder of I-15, ejecting the front passenger who had not been wearing a seat belt.
Tustin resident Julio Rios-Valencia, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene after failed resuscitative efforts, according to a release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner. Anguiano-Cazares and a third passenger received minor injuries and were transported to Barstow Community Hospital.
Upon being released by the hospital, Anguiano-Cazares was arrested.
The cause of the single-vehicle collision is still under investigation by CHP.
