More than 30 arrested in gang sweep
BARSTOW • A gang sweep in Barstow resulted in 32 arrests Friday.
Of the arrests, 19 were drug- or alcohol-related, according to a Barstow Police Department news release. Others were apprehended for burglary and witness intimidation.
The age range of those arrested was 18 to 62.
The sweep is conducted annually by Barstow Police as part of its affiliation with the San Bernardino County Movement Against Street Hoodlums, or SMASH.
The SMASH program is composed of officers from several law enforcement agencies within the county and is an ongoing effort to suppress local gang criminal activity.
Fifty law enforcement personnel, including parole and probation authorities, traveled to Barstow to participate in the sweep, according to the news release.
Officers made contact with 142 individuals throughout the citywide operation, which began at 3 p.m.
