Aztecs start with win
Barstow football runs past Adelanto
ADELANTO • Both the Barstow Aztecs and Adelanto Saints came into their 2013 season opener with a lot of question marks.
When the game was over, the Aztecs had found themselves a running back while the Saints were left knowing they have a lot of room left for improvement.
Oshua Rothwell had 13 carries for 229 yards and scored four touchdowns in leading Barstow to a 44-20 win over Adelanto in a Desert Sky League game on Friday night.
The Aztecs led 22-0 at the half. But the Saints came storming out for the second half.
First, Tejon Malone returned the kickoff 58 yards to the Barstow 27-yard line. On the very next play, Dequan Pree ran for the first touchdown in Adelanto history.
The Saints weren’t done.
The Saints forced and recovered a fumble on Barstow’s next possession. Then on third-and-goal from the Aztecs’ 26, Seth Hughes found a wide open Wiremu Burgess in the back of the end zone to cut the Barstow lead to 22-14.
That’s as close as the Saints would get — Rothwell made sure of that. The senior running back scored touchdowns of 26, 60 and 10 yards on the Aztecs next three possessions. All of a sudden, what was a close game became a Barstow blowout.
The Aztecs’ running game was working from the first whistle.
On Barstow’s opening possession, the Aztecs drove inside the Adelanto 10-yard line, but were forced to try a field goal that went wide right. The Barstow defense forced a three-and-out, then the offense took over.
The Aztecs once again were in Saints territory behind the running of Rothwell, George Gatti and Jordan Longo. Barstow had reached the Adelanto 29 when the first quarter ended.
It was a scoreless game, but not for long.
On the first play in the second quarter, Gatti rumbled in from 29 yards out to give the Aztecs a 7-0 lead. Barstow added to its lead later in the quarter as Rothwell scored the first of his four touchdowns — a 4-yard jaunt — to make it 13-0.
The Aztecs defense forced a third straight Adelanto punt, and this time the special teams got into the scoring act. Barstow blocked the punt out of the Saints’ end zone for a safety and a lead of 15-0.
Barstow finished off its 22-point second quarter on the ensuing possession when Long snuck in from the 1-yard line for a touchdown.
The Aztecs will be on the road at Littlerock next Friday night, and open their home schedule Sept. 13 against Garey at 7 p.m.
