BARSTOW — Authorities identified two Barstow men killed Saturday night after the vehicle they were traveling in left the roadway and then struck a train near the Yucca Avenue overpass.
San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department officials said Dupree Steele, 39, and Ramund Woods, 35, were pronounced dead at the scene after authorities responded at approximately 11:20 p.m.
Barstow Police Department officers responded to a call from a BNSF employee reporting a collision on the railroad tracks under the overpass. Officers arrived and found a 2009 Nissan Pathfinder had collided with the westbound train after plummeting down a 35-foot cliff, police said.
“The investigation revealed the driver of the vehicle was traveling southbound on Yucca Avenue and for unknown reasons lost control of the vehicle, crossed over the northbound lane of Yucca Avenue, continued into the desert area just north of the east side of the railroad bridge overpass and off the dirt ledge landing on the railroad tracks at the bottom of a 35-foot cliff. After the vehicle came to rest on the railroad tracks a westbound train collided with the vehicle,” police said in a statement.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call Corporal Nevarez at 760-256-2211. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call the WeTip hotline at 800-782-7436 or visit www.wetip.com.
