ADELANTO • The Barstow girls basketball team is looking to end the season strong and fighting for a playoff spot.
The Aztecs (12-10, 5-5 Desert Sky League) beat Adelanto on Thursday night 60-37, but despite the 23-point margin, coach Jerry Enriquez was disappointed in his team's performance.
Barstow, coming off a 55-54 loss to Victor Valley on Tuesday, didn't impress Enriquez, who said his team looked "sluggish."
"There's nothing positive to say about their performance," Enriquez said. "I don't care what the scoreboard says, we just didn't execute like we should have tonight. We fell into playing their style of street ball and we can't show up like that against Silverado next week."
The teams combined to turn the ball over 35 times in the first half.
After a slow start to the first quarter, where the Aztecs forced 10 Adelanto turnovers, they jumped to a 15-4 lead despite six turnovers of their own. Barstow forced 10 more turnovers in the second quarter en route to a 33-12 lead, but also matched the Saints' turnover total.
Saints coach Andrea Preston was proud to see her team compete to "till the final second."
"We had a talk at halftime and I told them they need realize our skill and not get so down on ourselves," Preston said. "They have to learn to not look up at that scoreboard and get so down. But we came out in the second half and kept our heads up. We do have a lot of work to do, but the margin was smaller than last time we played Barstow. That's a victory for us as we look to build towards next season."
Adelanto (1-11, 1-10 DSL) played a cleaner second half, committing just seven turnovers.
The Saints' Tajia Chatmon led all scorers with 15 points, including a 10-point third quarter. Chatmon added 10 rebounds to go along with five steals. Shalyn Trawick chipped in six points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists.
The Aztecs were led by Marion Mims' 14 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three blocks.
"Marion is coming into her own and she's only a sophomore," Enriquez said. "Unfortunately she fouled out tonight because she has been playing well the past two games. She's hustling on every play and she's looking good out there."
Tiare Alefaio came off the bench for the Aztecs and added eight points and 14 rebounds. Both Jasmine Green and Vasa Alefaio scored double digits, with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Adelanto travels to play Granite Hills on Tuesday; Barstow hosts Silverado.
"It's going to be another barn-burner that will go down to the end like all our games this season," Enriquez said.
