BARSTOW • A portion of East Main Street near Valley Street will be closed for six-to-eight weeks as a construction project at Dean Wash is set to begin Monday.
The closure is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. Monday, as crews for the SKANSKA construction company begin work on a project that will install a culvert over the wash and also remove dips in the road.
"All through traffic will be asked to go around and use the freeway at I-40," consulting city manager Brad Merrell said at Monday's city council meeting. "If you have a business or home in that area you'll be able to get to it. If you are traveling to the humane society or the animal hospital, we ask to get on I-15 at Montara and get off again at the Marine base and double back."
City manager Curt Mitchell said that people in the area affected by the road closure are being contacted.
"We are contacting the residents and the businesses being affected by the East Main (project)," Mitchell said. "We've also talked to the Marine (Corps Logistics) Base, Marine base representatives, to make them aware. Because it will affect the people that drive right there. They'll have to stay on the freeway."
"We're looking at moving as fast as we can," Merrell said.
