VICTORVILLE • A man led authorities on a high-speed chase on Interstate 15 from Barstow on Thursday evening before being taken into custody near the Stoddard Wells off-ramp.

California Highway Patrol, Barstow Police and San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies were involved in the chase, which began near Outlet Center Drive in Barstow.

A CHP official said a man's vehicle was getting towed and he argued with the tow truck driver, who unhooked the vehicle before the man fled in a burgundy SUV.

It was not immediately clear why authorities chased the man.

The man reportedly threw metal objects, including a handgun, out the window of the SUV at pursuing law enforcement vehicles during the chase, CHP officials said.

Spike strips were employed to disable the vehicle, and law enforcement officials surrounded the SUV after it stopped just north of the Stoddard Wells overpass. Barstow police used a dog to help apprehend the man.

According to witnesses, he initially got out of the vehicle after the stop but then got back inside. Officers eventually broke a window of the SUV and pulled the man out of the vehicle.

The man had restraints placed on his ankles and wrists and was put onto a gurney. He yelled and screamed at onlookers as he was loaded into an ambulance and driven from the scene at about 7:40 p.m.

Further details were not immediately available.
