BARSTOW The City of Barstow, in association with El Portal 95.9FM, The Duck 94.3FM, 102.5FM and the Rotary Club, will hold the 9th Annual New Mexico Chili Cook-off and Belen Fiestas on April 6.

The day-long free event at Foglesong Park on G Street is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It features a chili cook-off, dance contest and cash prizes. More than 15 acts will perform on two stages, including the Latin Rock group Tierra, Familia Dos, DJ Johnny T, DJ Slyhands, Mariachi Aguila Real, The Boogymen, Adelpha Alonzo and more.

At the City Council meeting on March 4, an El Portal disc jockey said the event is the largest involving the Hispanic community in the area.

Pinatas will be broken every 30 minutes and there will be games for children. Belen, N.M. is a sister city to Barstow, according to information about the event.

The cost is $10 to enter the chili cook-off. The winner will receive $150, second place, $100, and third, $75.
