SAN PEDRO Barstow High student Arturo Alcazar and BHS Principal Derrick Delton were honored by International Trade Education Programs a partner of the high school which establishes connections between students and professionals in trade, transportation and logistics industries.

Alcazar received the Carol Rowen 180 Degree Award on Wednesday night during a dinner at the Port of Los Angeles' World Cruise Center in San Pedro, given to him for his "dramatic turn-around from potential expulsion to a student leader with a 4.0. GPA," according to an ITEP news release.

Delton was named "Educator of the Year" that same night.

In addressing the crowd, Delton thanked a bevy of supporters, including his students and staff.

"For me, this award is a symbol of the importance of what we do as educators," his speech read. "As an educator, I find that most growth occurs when positive relationships are established between students and staff."

The award is also a recognition of BHS, Delton said by phone Thursday.

"To get an award in education is the total opposite of why you get in," he explained. "You get in to help kids. (The fact) that people from a different part of the state would recognize that we're doing great things in Barstow, I think it's an awesome achievement."

BHS and ITEP have partnered since 2007 when the Mojave XP Logistics Academy at the high school began, according to ITEP.
