BARSTOW • The Barstow track and field teams went up against Sultana on Thursday, with both teams taking victories.
The Aztec girls earned a big win, beating the Sultans by a 90-48 score, with the boys' competition a lot closer, but Barstow coming out on top, 70-61.
"I'm very proud of all our athletes today, as the temperatures rose to almost 90 degrees for the first time in a while. The kids didn't think twice about competing at their best and finishing strong," said Aztecs head coach Richard Esposito. "Geng-Wi Lee, Frankie Baca and Chyna Irvin led the distance crew with impressive victories in the 1600 and 3200, and Vanessa Robinson and Dequan Newell hit personal bests in discus. Autumn Hazlette continued to dominate her jumping events, as did Dominique Kelly and James Noble in the 100 meters."
The Lady Aztecs did well in long jump, taking the top three spots: Hazlette first at 15', followed by Jazzy McClendon (14'3") and Kaylen Smith (12'6"). There was another sweep in high jump, with Hazlette (4'4"), Maxine Cooks (4'2") and McClendon (4'2") finishing 1-2-3. Hazlette was also first in triple jump at 30'10", with Noemi Martinez (30'1") right behind.
For the boys, Deon Thompson was first in high jump at 5'4".
In throwing events, Dequan Newell was first in discus at 130'8", with Marquis Jones (103'5") next. Vanessa Robinson's throw of 89'2" led the girls. The Aztecs' Jason Tucker had the longest shot put throw at 38'9", with Vasa Alefaio second among the girls at 31'1".
Geng-Wei Lee took the 1600m run at 5.14.45, and also won the 800 in 2.21.46. The boys 100 was won by James Noble at 11.20, while Sharon Green won the girls race in 12.91. Noble won the 200 in 25.78, with Dominique Kelly winning the girls race in 28.32, and Martinez right on her heels at 28.73. Frankie Baca was first in the 3200 at 13.35, followed by Matthew Yslas (14.03) and Lee (14.32). Chyna Irwin took the girls race in 16.33, with Elizabeth Ince (18.2) second and Maria Miranda (18.21) third. Barstow's Joey Lane was first in the 300IH at 46.16.
Barstow will host a meet against Hesperia on Thursday.
