BARSTOW The Aztecs are unbeaten so far in tourney play.

The Barstow High School baseball team is kicking off the season by competing in the San Gorgonio Tournament. The Aztecs beat Serrano last Thursday in game one, then faced Rim of the World on Tuesday and handed the Fighting Scots a 9-2 loss, to remain undefeated.

As in their first game, Barstow displayed strong offense, defense and pitching. The team rapped out 12 hits and got a fine mound performance from Austin Willis, who went six innings, scattering three hits and giving up one earned run. The first two batters of the game scored, then the Scots were kept quiet for the next six frames.

That two-run lead was also erased quickly, as the Aztecs came back to score three times in the bottom of the first. They tacked on single runs in the third and fourth, and two in each of the second and fifth.

"They got their first two runners in, then Willis and (catcher Storm) Phillips took command," said Aztecs head coach Kenny Phillips. "Phillips called the pitches and Willis put them there."

The battery also contributed at the plate, with both Willis and Phillips hitting RBI singles. Colin Klein went a perfect 4-for-4 and scored three runs, Austin Crank had three singles and drove in two runs, and Sean Schoffstahl hit his first varsity home run.

"I have a 10-hit minimum, that's my philosophy," said coach Phillips of his team's offense. "As long as we hit, we can manufacture runs."

Zeke Haenelt threw the last inning, giving up no runs or hits, striking out one.

The Aztecs went to 2-0 on a beautiful day for a ballgame that brought out a sizeable crowd. The fans were treated to a well-played win by the home team.

"It was a well-executed win. We could see the fruits of our labors of all the countless hours spent practicing," said Phillips. "The guys played well and played together. They supported Willis with good defense and a lot of offense."

The Aztecs continue with the tourney on Thursday, hosting Ramona for a 3:15 p.m. start. A win in that game would put Barstow in the championship match, to be played Saturday at San Gorgonio High School.
