BARSTOW • Dollar General opened their new store in Barstow on Main Street earlier this month and is attracting a number of local shoppers, including some who walk.
"We know convenience is a major factor in our customers' shopping decisions as we generally serve customers within a 3 to 5 mile radius, or 10 minute drive," Dollar General spokeswoman Crystal Ghassemi said in an email.
"A lot of customers walk," said Assistant Manager Dustin Peppard at the new Main Street store.
He said in the two weeks they've been open, business has grown steadily.
"At first it was kind of slow but now it's really picking up," he said.
The new store is part of 50 additional stores the retailer plans to open in California this year, according to Ghassemi. And it's the second to be opened in Barstow.
"They've got a good variety and it's not too expensive," said local resident Karen Thomas. "I'm actually kind of surprised."
Another shopper, Carlos Vero, said he thought the store was nicer and cleaner than Walmart and said their prices "beat" other retailers.
Each of the stores employs six to 10 people and the company looks at demographic trends, competitive factors and traffic patterns when deciding on locations, according to Ghassemi.
The company's store on Rimrock Road opened in May 2012.
"People from this side of town have made comments that it's more convenient for them to walk to," Store Manager Guadalupe Segovia said. "Business has been good."
The store on 300 West Main Street will host their grand opening Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. The first 50 shoppers will receive a $10 gift card, among other giveaways and prizes.
