BARSTOW • Two Golden State Water projects are underway in different parts of the city, including replacing 4,200 feet of pipeline on West Fredericks Street and installing a new water main on Navajo Street.

Pipeline replacement on West Fredericks Street will occur between May and Seventh avenues and is expected to be completed by April.

Golden State will also install 11 fire hydrants and reconnect 104 service lines for residential customers as part of that project, according to a news release.

The new 8-inch pipeline is expected to improve the hydraulics and reliability of the Barstow Water System as the existing pipelines are smaller in diameter and are more vulnerable to leaks as a result of their age, the news release said.

"The new pipeline will ensure dependable, high-quality water for our Barstow customers," District Manager Perry Dahlstrom said in a prepared statement. "Golden State believes that proactive system improvements are critical to protecting water service now and for future generations. Delaying or deferring needed improvements can be more costly and jeopardize water quality and reliability."

Golden State estimates the cost to replace the pipelines at about $960,000.

The new 8-inch water main on Navajo Street will run from Lillian Drive to Roberta Steet. Installation also includes 10 fire hydrants and the reconnection of 79 domestic water services.

Construction on that project is expected to be completed by the end of March.

During construction for both projects, streets will remain open to traffic, but traffic and parking may be restricted and access to driveways limited for short periods of time, according to the news release.

Water service may also be disrupted while the new facilities are connected to the existing water system, according to the news release. Customers will receive advance notice of any service disruptions. Work hours for the projects will be between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.
