Henderson Elementary fourth-graders Denise Meissen, foreground, and David Maes, background, paste magazine clippings onto a poster board to make a mosaic during the school district's America Recycles Day Thursday. The poster will join other art pieces made during the day to be displayed at the Desert Discovery Center in April.
In addition to making art, the students learned about recycling, protecting the animals of the desert, and took home worm composting bottles.
"The purpose behind the event and for our whole recycling program is to engage all third and fourth-graders in recycling education. It's important that we really engage them at a young age," said Jane Laraman-Brockhurst, co-director of the Desert Discovery Center, who helped plan the event.
