NEAR BAKER • A 54-year-old Nevada man was killed and two passengers injured early Monday morning north of Baker when their SUV overturned and struck a guardrail.
James Bird, 54, of Henderson, Nev. was driving a 2004 Nissan Xterra northbound on Interstate 15 about three miles south of Nipton Road when he lost control of the SUV, according to a report by the San Bernardino County Coroner's Department.
The Nissan then rolled into a ravine on the east side of the interstate and overturned, according to a report by the California Highway Patrol. The vehicle struck a guardrail before landing back on its wheels.
Bird — who was not wearing a seatbelt — was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers — one wearing a seatbelt and one without a seatbelt — received minor injuries in the crash and were transported to University Medical Center in Las Vegas.
It does not appear that alcohol or drug use was involved in the collision, according to the CHP report.
