BARSTOW • The Barstow High School track and field teams earned their first Desert Sky League victories of the year during the last league meet of the season on Thursday.
The Aztecs boys beat Victor Valley 77-12 while the girls won 65-46 in a meet that was affected by the wind. With winds gusting above 20 mph the competitors from both teams found themselves limited and coaches from the Aztecs and the Jackrabbits said it limited the level of competition. Barstow ended the season 1-4 in the DSL and 2-5 overall for both the boys and girls teams.
"Today felt good," Barstow coach Harold Green said. "The kids have definitely worked hard, and it's good to come away with one. The real goal is getting some of the kids to the DSL Finals next week and then on to CIF."
Green said he believes Karlan Smith and Joey Lane have the best shot at moving on for the Aztecs' boys team, but there are chances for other athletes. Smith took first place in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter runs as well as the 4x400-meter relay team. Lane swept the hurdle events while setting personal records of 18.14 and 46.50 in the events.
Smith and Lane helped Barstow dominate on the boys side of the meet. The Aztecs took first place in every event except the 100-meter dash which was won by Victor Valley's Cyre Tate.
"The boys have been low in numbers this season," Victor Valley coach Jackie Tomblin said. "We haven't competed very well. We weren't able to fill out every event."
Although the Aztecs easily controlled the boys side of the meet, it was much closer in the girls events. Barstow didn't control the top of the score sheet, but placed more kids to get the win. The Jackrabbits earned eight first place finishes to Barstow's six, but still couldn't pull off the victory. The Aztecs had 10 athletes finish in second place while only two Jackrabbits did the same.
Green said he expects Bianca Goodson, who set personal records in the hurdles on Thursday, and Megan Peacock to make the CIF Finals for the Aztecs' girls team.
Both schools will now prepare for the DSL Finals on May 5 at Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest. The track coaches from the DSL are holding a meeting this weekend to make the final selections for the meet. The selections will be announced next week.
