NEEDLES • A vegetation fire in Needles has burned 300 acres and was 50 percent contained Tuesday afternoon as more than 100 county firefighters tackle the blaze.
According to a San Bernardino County Fire Department report, firefighters responded to a vegetation fire south of the Jack Smith Memorial Park in Needles Tuesday morning. The high winds drove the fire south, destroying an abandoned building.
The firefighters stopped the forward spread of the fire by Tuesday afternoon and hope to have full containment of the fire by Wednesday evening as the winds die down, county officials reported.
There are no structures threatened and no evacuation has been ordered.
Fire officials say the blaze began when the wind blew embers from an unattended campfire in an area frequented by transients into nearby vegetation.
