BARSTOW A woman accused of assaulting her mother Sunday picked a bad choice for a hiding spot, resulting in a trip to the hospital before her arrest.

April Jenkins, 31, attacked her mother with a tire iron at a home on the 31000 block of Soapmine Road Sunday afternoon at approximately 1 p.m., according to a report from the Barstow Sheriff's Station. She then fled the scene, taking refuge in a semi-trailer on Soapmine Road.

However, the trailer contained a chemical known as DS2, used as a decontaminant for the interior of tanks. The caustic chemical had burned the socks off her feet by the time deputies found her at the trailer.

Deputies decontaminated Jenkins at the scene with water, then brought her to Barstow Community Hospital for treatment for her burns.

Jenkins was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and is in Barstow Jail with bail set at $50,000.

San Bernardino County HAZMAT responded and recovered cans of the chemicals for proper disposal.
