Correction 4/18: The names of the Barstow Pre-Teen Queen and Barstow Sweetheart have been corrected.

BARSTOW The flash and sparkle of rhinestones and glitter lit up a camouflage backdrop at the Old Gym at Barstow High School on Saturday night as 15 girls competed for top honors and paid tribute to members of the military at the 72nd Annual Barstow Pageant.

Anne-Shirley Harpole, 19, was chosen by a panel of judges to be Miss Barstow 2011 and Juliet Manzanares, 14, was chosen as the new Teen Miss Barstow. The two will become ambassadors to the community and will participate in community and charity events throughout the year.

Harpole will succeed Angelica Rodriguez as Miss Barstow, while Manzanares will succeed Charli Burnett as Teen Miss Barstow. Rodriguez said at the awards show that her favorite of the many community events she participated in was Christmas Cops for Kids, because of the reaction from the children some of whom would not receive any other gifts if it wasn't for the community's help. Before the winners were announced, Rodriguez told all of the girls that they needed to prepare themselves for a year of hard work and great memories.

"I feel truly blessed to have had this opportunity," said Rodriguez.

The ceremony kicked off with a tribute to the military, including a special video presentation of the national anthem which showed photos of participant's family members who were involved in the military.

Girls who did not win the actual titles of Teen and Miss Barstow were still able to compete for various prizes. According to pageant organizers, the prize package for the Barstow is the most generous of any local pageant in the country and even rivals some state and national competitions. Even babies can participate in the pageant, which pageant director Kris Watson says helps girls become involved in the community at a very young age.

The pageant may be 72 years old, but organizers are keeping up with the latest in technology and social networking by offering Miss and Teen Tweetheart for the girls who gathered the most followers on Twitter.

Prior to the main event Saturday night, contestants participated in an interview session with a panel of judges. They then modeled sportswear or swimsuits and evening gowns on Saturday night. The top five contestants also responded to an impromptu question on stage.

Harpole and Manzanares were not available for interview immediately following their crowning. The Desert Dispatch will profile them in upcoming stories.
