Barstow shows mercy on Cougars
BARSTOW 11, GRANITE HILLS 1: At Apple Valley, the Barstow High School softball team sent the Cougars home early for the second game in a row on Friday.
Barstow beat Granite Hills 13-1 in Barstow on Wednesday and nearly mirrored the feat coming up two runs short. The Aztecs allowed the Cougars to stay close on Friday, and they only led 2-0 going into the fourth inning. However, Barstow drove in nine runs in the fourth inning alone to set up the fifth inning mercy rule.
Taylor Purdy went four for four with four RBIs in the game. Barstow coach Richard Johannsen said the entire team was making contact and getting hits. Hannah Ulibarri pitched a complete game for the Aztecs.
Vasquez vanquishes Trojans
BASEBALL — VASQUEZ 18, SILVER VALLEY 0 | SOFTBALL — VASQUEZ 7, SILVER VALLEY 1: At Yermo, Vasquez swept Silver Valley on the diamond on Friday.
The Mustangs' baseball team couldn't pull away from Silver Valley early in the game, and Vasquez led 2-0 after the sixth inning. The Trojans' softball team kept it closer on Friday. They trailed 3-0 after the first inning, but battled throughout the game, according to Silver Valley coach Kevin Mintun. Mintun said Vasquez pitcher Emily Gordon made if difficult for the Trojans to get hits. Gordon also hit a home run that sailed all the way to the tennis courts behind the softball field.
Silver Valley's Deanna Armstrong pitched a complete game while also scoring the only run for the Trojans. She hit a stand-up double and moved to third base on a hit by Isla Sullivan. The Mustangs overthrew the ball to third base, and Armstrong came home.
