BARSTOW Three people were injured Wednesday afternoon after their pickup truck veered across the median and then struck a fence on Interstate 40 in Barstow, according to officials.

The pickup truck was heading eastbound on Interstate 40 near the Interstate 15 interchange when a dog that was inside the truck apparently jumped out of the side window, which may have distracted the driver and caused him to veer across the center median, said California Highway Patrol Officer C. Stevens. The truck went down a ravine and came to a stop after hitting a fence.

The two passengers, a woman and a boy, suffered minor injuries in the crash, but the driver was more seriously injured and was airlifted by Mercy Air, according to Stevens. All three occupants were wearing their seatbelts.

Stevens did not have more information on the dog and said it may have been picked up by Caltrans.
