BARSTOW • Students just beginning their careers and residents looking for a change will be able to see what local options are available to them at this year's job expo at Barstow Community College Friday.
This year, rather than just featuring potential employers and colleges, Barstow Community College will also be showcasing its Career Technical Education vocational program, said James Lee, program secretary and one of the event coordinators.
The job expo will feature hands-on exhibits, including machinery and vehicles students and job applicants could be working on. Counselors and instructors from the college's vocational education program to discuss certificate and degree options with job seekers.
Representatives from the county's Department of Workforce Development will also be at the job fair.
Applicants will also be able to attend workshops on resume writing and what to wear to an interview. There will also be computers available for people to access job applications online, Lee said.
Companies that will represented at the expo include Fort Irwin and the Marine Corps Logistics Base as well as military contractors like IEP World Services and Northrup Grumman. Retailers like Tanger Outlets and Walmart will also be at the expo as well as Barstow Unified School District.
"These are the (Human Resources) departments and their representatives," Lee said. "I definitely recommend dressing for success and bringing a resume."
This is the 15th year that the college has held its job fair, said public information officer Maureen Stokes. But college officials also decided to feature several other college and universities for people who have been in the workforce for years and are seeking a career change. Colleges include the Art Institute of California, the University of La Verne and San Joaquin Valley College.
"You can always pick up another trade if what you really want to do is not hiring right now or your field is flooded with applicants," Stokes said.
