BARSTOW • A herd of Burros crowded the middle of the leader board at the Desert Sky League golf match on Thursday giving Burroughs its first league win of the season.
The Burros have taken second and third places in the first four DSL matches this season, but have finished behind Granite Hills, with three team wins, and Barstow, who won last week's match, throughout the start of the season. Their luck changed on Thursday despite winds gusting above 40 mph which caused problems for all of the golfers.
"I think all of the teams did the best they could given the windy conditions," Victor Valley coach Robert Brooks said. "It was tough for the kids to adjust to the wind. It was coming at them from different directions because of the course's layout."
Burroughs' Anthony Sween led his team with an 85 on the day. His score ties his season best which he has now shot for three weeks in a row. He took fourth overall. Fellow Burros Jared Brown, PJ Homer and Tony Perine also finished in the top 10 to push their team into first place with a 470.
Barstow nearly closed the gap and would have finished with a 496 if it were not for a disqualification. Vicente Islas was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct on the course. The Aztecs only had five golfers because of several absence due to spring break and without Islas' score they were disqualified from the match.
Although the Aztecs team score was discounted, Jason Bales continued his excellence on the golf course taking first place in the fifth straight DSL match with an 81.
"I was having trouble today," Bales said. "I kept overplaying the wind. Playing in the first group with (Lorenzo Morgan, Dane Trudeau and Sween) in my group always kind of pushes me. It's friendly competition."
Barstow's disqualification opened the door for Granite Hills to take second place and Silverado to earn a rare third place this season.
The DSL teams will make the longest journey of the season for league play when they travel to Burrough's home course at China Lake next Thursday.
