DAGGETT • A man and a woman died in a house fire that completely consumed their home early Sunday morning.
Members of the Daggett Fire Department responded to the fire at the intersection of South Street and C Street around 5:35 a.m. after responding to a 911 call from a neighbor who woke up after smelling smoke, but the brick and wood structure was already engulfed in flames, said Daggett Fire Department Chief Joe Morris on Monday. It took about 45 minutes for firefighters — which included those from the Yermo and Newberry fire departments, and the Nebo and Yermo annexes of the Marine Corps Logistics Base — to contain the fire.
Firefighters had been told that there might be residents still inside the building, but were unable to locate anybody at the time of the blaze, said Morris. After the fire was out, firefighters discovered the bodies of an adult man and an adult woman inside the home.
According to Morris, the two both had limited mobility and may have been unable to escape from the home.
The cause of the fire is still undetermined, but investigators with the sheriff's arson team are inspecting the building, said Morris. The morning of the fire was windy and firefighters believe the blaze started at the southwest side of the structure, said Morris. He did not know if the home had any smoke detectors.
The San Bernardino County Coroner's office is still investigating the deaths and has not released the names of the two victims pending notification of family members, said Morris.
