BARSTOW • The stars and community leaders of Barstow will be honored Saturday night at the Barstow Area Chamber of Commerce Community Recognition Awards banquet.
About 75 men, women, businesses, non-profit organizations and events have been nominated in nine different categories by members of the public. Only one will be chosen from each category to receive an award. Other awards that will be given at the event include students of the year from each high school in both Barstow and Silver Valley Unified School District, as well as awards for Marine of the Year, National Training Center Airman of the Year and National Training Center Soldier of the Year.
The Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the 30th annual event, and the executive members of the Chamber of Commerce will also be sworn in Saturday night. The board will stay the same as last year, with Mark Sielski as president, Daniel Jenkins as vice president, Carol Randall as past president, and Jeff Eason Sr. as chief financial officer.
"The people who will be recognized Saturday night are all a very vital part of this community," said former Barstow Mayor Lawrence Dale, who will be master of ceremony this year along with John Madison. "The nominees are all very deserving, but you can only pick one out of each category."
The committee that decides the winners of each category is composed of former winners of Man or Woman of the Year and Man or Woman of Continuous Service, said Dianna Ross, administrative assistant for the Barstow Area Chamber of Commerce. The committee narrows the list of nominees down to three per category and then decides the winners, said Ross.
The awards will be presented by Miss Barstow and Miss Teen Barstow as well as San Bernardino County First District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt and representatives from Rep. Buck McKeon's and California Rep. Connie Conway's offices, but the winners of the prior year's contest will be the ones who have the honor of presenting and reading the biography of the award recipient, said Ross.
Tickets for the event are almost sold out, said Ross. People who would like to purchase more tickets or need more information about the event can call the chamber of commerce at (760) 256-8617.
