BARSTOW Despite help from police and a helicopter, deputies were unable to catch a man suspected of several burglaries during the past month during a search Sunday morning near the intersection of Irwin Road and Old Highway 58.

Deputies are seeking Michael Groves, 41, on suspicion of several burglaries performed throughout the past month in the area near Irwin Road and Old Highway 58 as well as a parole violation, said Sgt. Joe Braaten, watch commander for the Barstow sheriff's station. Braaten said most of the burglaries have been committed during the day.

A deputy patrolling the area tried to stop Groves for questioning when he was seen riding his bicycle against traffic on Old Highway 58 around 9:30 a.m., said Braaten. Groves then sped away in a southeast direction on his bicycle, and later abandoned his bicycle and began jumping fences. Deputies later found a backpack thought to belong to Groves with burglary tools, fireworks and possible stolen property inside.
